ErrorSmart: Smart Choice or Error in the Making?
General Information
ErrorSmart is a Windows registry cleaning tool that starts out with some pretty good intentions but ends up with some of the pitfalls common to applications in its niche. It does, however, have a few redeeming points that leave it worth considering, if for the most rudimentary cleaning functions. For a demo version of ErrorSmart, downloads are available from the makers’ website at ErrorSmart.com. ErrorSmart full version registration costs a one-time fee of $19.95.
Overall Verdict
For its price point, the ErrorSmart software package – it is just a piece, actually – might actually be worth a buy if you’re looking for something that can execute basic registry cleaning. If you’re looking for gentler methods and less aggressive tactics than the rest of the registry cleaning industry uses, ErrorSmart is a good option.
Just be warned that many ErrorSmart reviews claim that some demo download packages of ErrorSmart 2008 have viruses attached to them. Although that issue has supposedly been resolved for ErrorSmart 2009, it remains to be seen if the rest of the demo installers for this year will be completely virus-free.

Registry Repair Ability
ErrorSmart isn’t very memorable with a set of features that’s very much like those being offered by other programs in the same niche. That impression is only reinforced by its generic graphics and its interface, both of which look similar to those of its competitors. For the few features it offers, ErrorSmart does a fairly good, if unimpressive job.
On its maiden scan, ErrorSmart told me that I had 287 registry entries. That’s already a fairly high number, but it is somewhere on the middle of the spectrum compared to the results that other registry cleaners have given me so far. It scans for the kind of debris in the registry that tends to collect over the months and years of installing and removing programs. Outdated file associations and invalid shortcuts are part of that list – so far, so good.
Perhaps one of the better things about ErrorSmart is that its programming is not as aggressive as many of the other registry cleaning applications out there. In most cases, it only turns up entries that are really and truly useless (but not really harmful). Like any other cleaning program, though, it will prompt you for ErrorSmart activation the first chance it gets, saying that full functionality can only be had by ErrorSmart.com members and license holders.
Ease of Use
ErrorSmart is more or less idiot-proof with a largely graphical interface and very little unnecessary text to interpret. More advanced users, however, might find it frustrating to use as it offers few options for customizing performance and cleanup. It also doesn’t give a lot of details and elaborations about the errors that it finds.
Customer Support
The Live Chat customer support feature is a very nice touch. In terms of customer support, ErrorSmart has a definite advantage for the customer over email help desks, which much of the industry prefers to use. However, the customer service representatives’ answers don’t always offer a lot of insight. Keep your computer-literate friends handy if you decide to use ErrorSmart.
